At the Museum

Imagine - a sunny, summer day in the Vale of The White Horse in 1930 when life was more leisurely and the fields and the cottages lay dozing in the heat of the day.
Imagine - A branch line of the Great Western Railway, a giant steam-powered locomotive slowly materialises at a tunnel portal and heads across one of Brunel's intricate timber viaducts pulling more than 80 wagons.
If these are things that you would like to see again, then the detailed modelling at Pendon Museum is simply not to be missed.

The Dartmoor Scene

Pen Tor Road Station

Trains on the imaginary Porthkerrick Branch of the Great Western Railway wind their way from a junction with the main line between Exeter and Plymouth. The huge Brunel timber viaduct is an impressive scale model and a Pendon icon. Trains running on The Dartmoor Scene, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005, are accompanied by a commentary by members of the Pendon team.

The Vale Scene

The Wantage Tramway in the rural landscape of The Vale

Imagine a sunny, summer day in the glorious English countryside of the 1930s, when the pace of life was slower. Chalky lanes connected farms and scattered communities with their traditional thatched cottages. Cars and lorries were a rarity. Great Western Railway trains occasionally disturbed the peacefulness of the scene. Your imagination is realised at Pendon in the 70 foot long Vale Scene, the result of over 48 years of work by a dedicated team of volunteers.

The Madder Valley Railway

John Ahern's masterpiece - The Madder Valley Railway

John Ahern's famous Madder Valley Railway, dating from the 1930s, is on permanent display at the museum. This fascinating relic, which pioneered scenic craftsmanship, is operated on only a few days each year because of its fragile nature.
